We business owners love word of mouth referrals, don’t we? They’re like winning a “Most Popular” award in high school. Social proof that our customers love us. 

But word of mouth may not be working as well as you think it is. Do you ever wonder why you don’t have more customers? After all, you offer great service and fair prices. And all of your past customers seem happy to tell their friends about you. So why aren’t you booked solid?

Referral + Website = Verified

The other day, I couldn’t turn the burner knob on my stove. I needed a repairman, but didn’t know who to call, so I did what tons of people do, put a quick post in my neighborhood Facebook group. A kind woman gave me the name of TPA Appliance Repair (not the real name). I quickly googled it.

Why didn’t I just call to schedule an appointment? Because I needed verification. Something to back up this woman’s suggestion. A recommendation is a good start, but I still have so many questions: Is this company insured? What are their prices? Can they come on Sunday? Do they service Samsung stoves like mine? 

Guess what I found on Google? Nothing. It made me wonder: Does TPA Appliance Repair still exist? And even if they do, if they’re not modern enough to get online, should I be worried that their repair techniques are old-fashioned too?

The Competition Swoops In

I didn’t need to think about it for very long because when I googled the words “TPA Appliance Repair” and no listing for that company showed up, a whole bunch of other similar-type companies did. I clicked on the first one, took a quick glance through their website, noting prices for service calls, warranty on parts, and excellent reviews and booked an appointment online.

I wonder how many other people have been referred to TPA? Do they have the best service? Cheaper prices? I’ll never know. And I bet I’m not the only one.  

People can be skeptical, but when your current clients recommend you AND you’re easy to find online you make it easy for new people to trust you and want to work with you.

A Website Is Not Optional

In 2022 websites are considered standard for any business. A well-designed website immediately communicates with your online visitors, showing them who you are, what you do and how you can help them. It’s a place to answer frequently asked questions, describe your services, display reviews and give people an easy way to contact you.
